HOW IT STARTED

After visiting several makerspaces in other school districts, Sandy Groom-Meeks (technology instructional coach) wanted to start a makerspace at MOC-Floyd Valley. Teaming up with Marlene De Zeeuw (6th-12th grade teacher librarian), the makerspace adventure began. Starting with borrowed materials from the area education agency and supplementing those with low-cost/no-cost items, the middle school makerspace was born. Administration and staff supported their efforts and students responded positively. They plan to continue adding STEAM items by writing grants, seeking local funding and scouring their school district for other equipment that could be used. All four buildings in the district (K-12) should soon see various levels of makerspace activities.
